Thwaites: ‘Let’s increase the focus on special education.’

Addressing the 4th Mico University College Child Assessment and Research in Education (CARE) biennial conference at the Jamaica Conference Centre Thursday, the Education Minister Ronald Thwaites called for an increased focus on the delivery of special education to Jamaica’s children especially those who are in need of early intervention.

The conference’s theme was ‘Excellence in Education for all our children through Early Stimulation, Identification and Intervention’.

According to the minister, ‘almost 30 per cent of Jamaica’s students range from “mild to serious” on the gamut of special education needs. He also mentioned that Jamaica has a higher percentage of special need students when compared to other countries around the world.

Mr. Thwaites want the leaders of education to focus on early intervention as well focus their efforts on early childhood education.
