15% of students are experiencing educational difficulties; however 100% literacy rate on target

Minister of Education Hon. Rev. Thwaites announced in the House of Representatives that there are 15 per cent of students facing educational difficulties and since the inception in 2009 of the Grade Four Literacy Test (GFLT) the overall performance of students have been improving progressively.

The Minister says the objective of the programme is to have all students by 2015 achieving full proficiency at literacy and numeracy and they are on track to achieving that.

Following four unsuccessful attempts at achieving proficiency at GFLT, students are supported in there learning through the Alternative Secondary Transition Education Programme (ASTEP).

The Ministry of Education is currently reviewing ASTEP to assess whether it is fulfilling its remit.
