JTA pays homage to history at Mizpah Primary

MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Members of the teachers’ union, Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA), gathered in their numbers at the Mizpah Primary School in Walderston, northern Manchester, earlier this month for their Founders Day ceremony.

As explained by Byron Farquharson, secretary general of the JTA, Mizpah Primary is of special significance to teachers since it was there that the Jamaica Union of Teachers (JUT) was established way back in 1894.

In 1964 the JUT and several other teachers’ associations were merged to form the JTA. Then in 1994, the centenary of the founding of the JUT, a monument was erected at Mizpah Primary School to mark the “roots” of organised teachers’ associations in Jamaica.

Following speeches and cultural items, the recently spruced up monument was formally rededicated and unveiled at the Founders Day function.
